The dog was bred from the Border region’s native terriers to hunt otters and badgers. It was first recorded as a distinct breed in 1700 and made famous in the book Guy Mannering by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1814. In it, the character Dandie Dinmont keeps six of the dogs.
