History and Origin of Caucasian Shepherd Dog

The Caucasian Sheepdog is believed to have developed from Tibetan dogs who accompanied nomads who settled in the Caucasus Mountains area more than 2,000 years ago. Because the Ovcharka Sheepdog was isolated from other breeds and not subject to organized breed programs, the dog breed remained pure but ancient. In the twentieth century, the United Socialist Soviet Russia began a rigorous breeding program to utilize Ovcharkas.
