History and Origin of Jack Russell Terrier


The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell, who bred a strain of terriers for working foxes in Devonshire, England, in the mid-to-late 1800s. The Jack Russell Terrier of today is the same as the original John Russell breed.

There are 3 types of Jack Russell terriers. They are:

  • The Parson Russell Terrier: can measure 13 to 14.5 inches that are 33 to 36 cm
  • The Russell original European Jack Russell: usually measures 10 to 12 inches that are 25 to 30 cm
  • The American Jack Russell: can measure 10 to 15 inches that are 25 to 37.5 cm

Physical Description of Parson Russell Terrier


The Jack Russell Terrier is small to medium-sized, sturdy, and muscular. It has a flat skull and a black nose. The almond-shaped eyes are dark, and the small, V-shaped ears fold forward.

It is well-balanced, with a small chest and straight legs. Its short tail is carried erect. There is a short, smooth, or broken coat. There is always a minimum of 51 percent white on the body, with tan, black, and brown markings.
