Dog breed groups are of great help in categorizing the breed for exhibition purposes and aiding the purchase to select the breed suited to the purpose. In my article, I shall discuss the most dog breed groups categorized by universal Kennel clubs.
1. Non-sporting Dog Breed Groups
This is the group from which many pet dogs are selected. The breeds may well have performed some tasks in the past, but they are now the dog breeds whose sole purpose in life is to be a companion to their owner. The non-sporting dog breeds are Bulldog, Dalmatian, Schnauzer, Keeshond, Chow chow, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso.
2. Working Dog Breeds
This group of dogs covers the traditional guard and workers- rescue, sled, and draft dogs, and those favored by the armed services. These breeds are developed to work, and most are happiest when they are doing the work for which they are developed or at least when in a situation where their abilities will not waste. The typical working dog breeds are Great Dane, Boxer, Alaskan Malamute, Rottweiler, Doberman, and Siberian Huskey.
3. Herding Dog Breed Groups
The breeds in this group were initially being developed to protect or herd sheep, cattle, and others stocks. Shepherd farmers still use many dog breeds, but they are also highly adoptable pets. They are often considered as family pers and herding dogs together. The common herding dog breeds are German Shepherd, Border Colie, Newfoundland, Hungarian Puli, Australian Cattle Dog, and Hovawart.

The typical hounds are Beagle, Bloodhound, Greyhound, Saluki, Borzoi, Basenji, Italian Seguigo, Swiss Hound, and Dachshund.
6. Terrier Dog Breeds
These dogs were bred to go ground, hunt vermin, and bolt the fox from its lair. The terrier dogs are energetic, sometimes noisy, and sporting. Most terrier dog breeds are affectionate, but they can be nippy. The most common terrier dog breeds are Bull Terrier, Airdale, Miniature, Bedlington, Iris, Wire Fox, Kerry Blue, Cairn, Norfolk, Skye, Australian, Welsh, Jack Russel Terrier, and many more.

7. Toy Dog Breeds
